Sacramento authorities are looking into a gunfire incident that took place on April 18 2026 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area at the time deputies were shutting down an unauthorized event of a crowd of several hundred.

Background

Sacramento County law enforcement were first dispatched to the park at approximately 6:30 PM after obtaining information of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Not long after, another report was received about a possible fight breaking out within the park grounds.

A law enforcement helicopter conducted an aerial sweep but could not confirm any ongoing fight. Even so, it became clear that hundreds of people had congregated at Howe Park without official sanction.

The Dispersal and Shooting

Law enforcement personnel set about removing people from the park by encircling the gathering and using their vehicle PA systems commanding the assembled crowd to vacate the area. Nearly 15 minutes were allotted for attendees to disperse.

Just as the crowd began to move that an estimated 20 to 25 shots cut through the air. The sudden gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Law enforcement immediately began locating gunshot victims.

Those Who Were Hit

Altogether, four people were confirmed as gunshot victims. All four — including a female and three males each reported to be in their 20s at the time of the incident — were airlifted or driven to local Sacramento hospitals. Emergency physicians stated that two victims were in serious condition, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. Thankfully, all four were in stable condition.

Sacramento fire crews provided support and aided in treating the injured before they were taken to the hospital.

Crime Scene Evidence

The bulk of the shooting was believed to have taken place on the Cottage Way side of the park close to the Home Depot store situated at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Investigators identified Howe Park Sacramento gunfire extra shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Projectile impacts were noted in the wrought iron fence near the Home Depot. These findings indicated that at least one shooter had been aiming south from the Cottage Way area in the direction of the Home Depot building and parking lot. That Home Depot location was locked down while the scene was active. Crime scene personnel remained on scene through the early morning hours.
